don't pass Exceptions directly to utils.warn.foo...

don't pass Exceptions directly to utils.warn.foo Since we can have Exceptions with unicode messages, '%s' % e will fail if e's message is non-ascii. Make sure that str(e) will succeed, else pass e.message directly.
